The Citizens Advice Bureau Advice Guide has lots of useful information on many topics including benefits, managing debt and budgeting.

Money Advice Service

The Money Advice Service is an independent organisation which provides useful money advice tools and information.  

Toolkits include: 

• A loan calculator
• Interest-only Mortgages Toolkit
• Pensions - Automatic Enrolment toolkit
• Teenage voices on first financial decisions
 

Work out if you might be eligible to apply for a benefit

Check out Glasgow City Council’s online calculator for calculating and claiming Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction.

The charity Turn2Us has a good website which can help you access benefits and grants and includes a benefit calculator.
 

Applying for benefit

You can get an estimate of what benefits you could get, and find out about claiming specific benefits on the Direct Gov website. You can also find out how your benefits would be affected by a change in circumstances (eg if you find work).
Working Tax Credit

If you are new to tax credits, contact the Tax Credit Helpline for a claim form. It takes up to 2 weeks to arrive.

If you’re already claiming tax credits you don’t need a claim form - just call the helpline to update your claim.

Benefit Appeals

Social Work Services can offer advice on how to appeal and free representation at your appeal from a specialist team of welfare rights officers. If you want to be represented by a welfare rights officer then you should fill in a mandate form at your local social work office or use the Welfare Rights Online Appeal form click here.  Or you can use our sample letter of appeal [33kb].

 

Advice and Support

Advice and support is also available for citizen's of Glasgow on a variety of topics at the Your Support, Your Way Glasgow portal www.yoursupportglasgow.org/.

 

Self Service at Glasgow City Council

Glasgow City Council has an online self service option available for Council Tax, Council Tax Reduction and Housing Benefit.  A self service page can be set up here. The Self Service pages give you instant online access to view and manage your Housing Benefit, Council Tax account or Council Tax Reduction and includes access to a benefit calculator.
